The Human Services Center's clinical programs and staff members treat a variety of mental health and relationship problems. These can include anxiety, depression, marital difficulties, and child-rearing problems as well as more serious problems such as the hallucinations and delusions that often accompany schizophrenia. Services are provided by highly qualified and licensed professionals that include psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, case managers, and counselors.
A family's first step should always be to walk in or call 724-658-3578. Hours of operation are 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Walk ins are only available at our 130 West North Street facility during these hours of operation.
The Human Services Center charges reasonable fees for its services that often may be paid for through private or public insurance. However, should there be any question regarding payment, our trained staff will guide you through your options. When calling, you should always have your insurance information available. No one is turned away because of lack of resources or inability to pay. Staff can aid you in enrolling in pertinent government funded programs for which you may be eligible.
The Human Services Center has a large number of locations throughout Lawrence County. Principal administrative offices are located at 130 West North Street, New Castle, PA.
Sometimes there is a need for immediate help. Of course, one can always walk in during normal office hours at our West North Street facility in New Castle (Monday-Friday, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm) A crisis line is available 24/7 at 724-652-9000.

RESIDENTIAL/VOCATIONAL SERVICESThe Human Services Center provides a broad array of housing and vocational/training options for individuals with a history of, as well as current, mental health difficulties. These options range from independent, individual apartment living through fully supervised group living sites in both urban rural settings. While the goal of housing options is to stabilize and aid individuals in their journey to live independently, it is recognized that, for some individuals, long-term care is a necessity.EdgewoodEdgewood is a fully supervised, 10 bed, rural based, residential program for individuals with serious psychiatric difficulties. Admission is directly from inpatient psychiatric care. This program’s focus is a step down from hospital care, leading to stabilization, and ultimately less intensive community and/or residential care.WestfieldWestfield is a fully supervised, 8 bed, rural based, residential program for individuals with serious psychiatric difficulties. Typically, they have an extensive history of mental health treatment including numerous acute as well as extended hospital stays.CaritasCaritas is a fully supervised, 11 bed residential program. The rural based program is located on 41 acres in Slippery Rock Township. This program serves individuals with a history of serious psychiatric difficulties that have been treated with a variety of methods including acute and long term hospital care. On site vocational programming for the residents includes Canine Cuts Animal Grooming/Shelter/Kennel, raising alpacas, weaving, and farm product management. These are congregate living sites that are administered by the residents who have a history of mental health treatment. Resident governance includes oversight of admission, supports, every day living and discharge. Residents are required to be employed commensurate with their skill levels at a minimum of 10 hours per week.Ellwood City ApartmentsThe Human Services Center provides sixteen (16) single room occupancy (Apartment LivingThe Human Services Center provides a large array of independent apartment living options. Currently there are forty (40) apartments located in a variety of different settings. The majority of these apartments are for individual adults only. However, a few apartments can accommodate small families or married couples. The rents are modest and often subsidized by government (e.g., HUD – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) in order to further provide access to affordable, comfortable, and safe apartment living.Transitional LivingThe Human Services Center operates two facilities. The first facility houses up to six adults who are homeless. Persons stay until they gain the skills and resources to move into more permanent living quarters. The second facility is for up to three persons with chronic mental illness who need significant support to be maintained in the community. These individuals may transition to a more structured setting or into one with less structure.Certified Peer SpecialistsThis program provides support, encouragement and guidance to consumers during their recovery. The staff are comprised of individuals who have received services from the mental health system, have made significant strides in their own recovery, and have received extensive training regarding pertinent/effective strategies to overcome the impact of mental health difficulties.WBHA Vocational/Employment ProgramsThe Human Services Center provides a number of vocational/employment programs under the auspices of WBHA (Westfield Behavioral Health Affiliates.) These programs provide training and employment opportunities forFairweather Janitorial ServicesThis is a client-managed, client-provided janitorial service for area businesses. Interested parties should contact the Human Services Center’s Director of Housing, Steve Plyler at 724-658-3578, ext. 135, to arrange for services.Westwood EnterprisesWestwood Enterprises is a rural based business that includes leaf recycling/processing, the cultivation and sale of vegetables and flowers, handmade crafts, woodworking, and the sale of preserved fruits and vegetables.Caritas Weaving LoftThe Caritas Weaving Loft sells a variety of products that are handmade by clients from the fleece from Angora rabbits and alpacas.
